Chattanooga Coin Marilyn Monroe Collection
Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on Tuesday, June 1st, 1926, in Los Angeles General Hospital. Prior to her birth, Marilyn's father, Martin Edward Mortensen had bought a motorcycle and headed north to San Francisco, abandoning the family in Los Angeles. Raised for a time by her single mom Gladys who would soon abandon her daughter to a series of foster homes as well as the Los Angeles Orphans Home, Marilyn grew up never really knowing who her father was. Having had her named changed to Norma Jeane Baker, Marilyn was acquainted with poverty and hardship.
But Marilyn would rise above her extreme disadvantages to not only make something of herself, but to become one of Hollywood's most celebrated actresses and enduring symbols. Gaining fame through her God-given beauty and portrayal of the 'dumb blonde' persona, Marilyn actually was no mental midget. She studied her craft to improve her acting stock and was quite well read, owning over 200 books. Best known for her marriages to Joe DiMaggio and playright Arthur Miller, Marilyn worked her way from bit parts to lead roles, most notably "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," "The Seven-Year Itch," and "Some Like it Hot." The candle of her life burned short but bright as her latter years were marked by depression, psycho-therapy and trouble on her movie sets.
Famous also for appearing on the first cover of Playboy Magazine in 1953, Marilyn's last public appearance was her singing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" at a birthday party for President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962.
