In 1883, the last King of Hawaii commissioned the U.S. Mint at San Francisco to strike coins for Hawaii. Designed by U.S. Mint Engraver Charles Barber, the coins were the same size, weight, denomination, and metallic composition as their U.S. counterparts.
All Hawaiian coins were recalled in 1900 after a failed insurrection against the U.S. territorial government. The ones that were returned to the Mint….Lots of them… were melted in 1902 thus accounting for their current scarcity.
