The Naples, Florida currency hoard was actually called the Great American Currency Collection when it first came to light and was sold on the now defunct “Shop at Home” shopping channel in January, 1997.
At the time we sold the first part that included only high grade raw notes like the 1934 $500/$1000 bills, 1923 Portholes, Chiefs, Tombstone notes and a lot of other “scarcer” currency. Since the original sales on TV from (1997 – 2001) more inventory has come to the market including a lot of certified PMG and PCGS slabbed notes. It seems that Chattanooga Coin wasn’t the only dealers who originally trusted the currency slabbers to grade and certify quality and rare notes. Over the last (8 – 10) years we have slowly dug out some of the good stuff for our in-house clients who were specializing in collecting topical categories like the Nationals, Large Type Notes and broken Bank Notes from 1830 – 1875. In fact the deal was so large that it was several years of negotiating and dealing with the owners until the collection was finally and completely in our hands. As a collector myself of this type of quality material I actually put it aside and labeled each lot of the interesting and premium stuff for the company archives. It has been like “money in the bank” holding this stuff and the demand for quality seems to never go away. The Naples hoard was a special collection. The owners who took the time and patience of putting it up for a rainy day were very cognizant of what most collectors were collecting and wanted. They concentrated on virtually everything in U. S. notes but especially large type and small size U. S. that today remains out of circulation. We did have some $5000 and $10,000 notes but sold those out (except for a few) years ago. The deal also included bulk lots of nice crisp stuff from 1928, 1934 and packs of $2 bills from1953/1963 and 1976. For the fun of it, we are going to include an actual 1997 sticker on each lot we sell: It’s Original Naples Hoard and lot number.
This is like buying the crème from 15 years ago but at a slightly higher price (obviously) than 1997. We’ve had this material for years but it has thinned out. So, if you want a piece of history here is the deal to get it. As I said some of the lots were actually submitted for grading so watch out for those in particular. We might also sneak in the beginning of the Broken Bank and Confederates also. It may take us one to two years to put it all on the web but we think it can be done. So make sure you keep visiting this deal if you want some real surprises.
