Genuine 'Civil War Tokens' (3 coins)
Civil War tokens were born out of necessity. By 1863, coinage of every type disappeared from circulation. The outcome of the Civil War was in doubt and many commodities were scarce. But…American capitalism found a solution in ‘private issue’ tokens. Broadly categorized, these tokens were ‘merchant’ tokens with advertising or imitations of real U. S. cents with political or patriotic slogans. Civil War tokens were issued in an estimated 10,000 varieties, but only for about 18 months. A law of April 22, 1864 outlawed them and mintage ceased. We picked up about 60 of these old copper tokens at a recent coin show. They are about evenly divided among merchant and patriotic tokens. Most are dated 1863, some 1864 and a few were not dated. Grades range from VG to EF, and have a wide variety of designs. Dates and designs are our choice, but when you order 3, you’ll get 3 different ones.
